How to Turn a Photo Into Anime with AI

Turning a photo into anime is one of the most fun things you can do with AI — but the wrong setting gives you a creepy half-photo, half-cartoon result. Here’s how to do it well, for free, in about a minute.

The quick version

Open the image-to-image tool, upload your photo, add a short prompt like “anime style portrait”, and generate. That’s it. The output keeps your composition but redraws it in an anime style.

iPhone photos (HEIC) work directly — no need to convert to JPG first.

The one setting that matters: strength

Variation strength controls how much the AI changes your photo. This is where most people go wrong. Too low (around 0.4–0.6) and you get the uncanny valley — realistic skin with anime eyes pasted on, which looks unsettling.

Around 0.75 is the sweet spot: the model commits to a clean anime style while still resembling the original. Push higher (0.85–0.9) for a fully redrawn look that drifts further from the photo. Free Image Maker defaults to 0.75 for exactly this reason.

Tips for the best conversion

Use a clear photo with good lighting and a visible face. Tight extreme close-ups are the hardest to convert cleanly — a head-and-shoulders or half-body shot works better. Add a short style hint to your prompt (“soft anime, detailed eyes”) to steer the look.

Because the output follows your photo’s aspect ratio, you won’t get a squished or stretched result no matter what shape you upload.

It’s free and private

There’s no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many you make. Your uploaded photo is used only to generate the image and is never stored on our servers.

Try it yourself — free, no sign-up.
